Wireless Internet

Wireless Communications offers high quality wireless broadband and connectivity services in Auckland & Nelson. We’re constantly expanding to be able to provide urban, rural and corporate clients with high speed, highly secure, fast broadband Internet access independent of your phone line and other services

We have two speed options and all of our wireless connections are low in latency (lag). We operate our wireless network using a combination of the 2.4GHz & 5GHz radio frequencies. As these connections are always connected, we recommend that you use a firewall in your local network to prevent unauthorised access to your network.

Benefits of Wireless Broadband

  • High Speed! 10Mbps+
  • Low Latency = Great gaming! Quick web page loads!

Wireless Broadband Router/Firewall
Installation of our wireless broadband service is for a single PC installation only. If you require more computers to be connected to your local network, or if you need wireless capabilities then we can provide a 4-port wireless router for an additional price. These units act as your firewall to protect you from Internet nasties. For enhanced firewall protection, click here to check out our ROCKBox Firewall

FAQ

  • What’s the difference between wireless broadband and conventional broadband?
Wireless broadband from Wireless Communications delivers a greater broadband experience because it doesn’t need to use phone lines. It’s not affected by factors such as the distance from the local exchange. Realtime applications such as Digital Phone (known as Voice over IP or VoIP), the exceptionally low latency (delay in transmission of data) of wireless makes all the difference compared to conventional ADSL. In direct contrast, ADSL operates over existing copper phone lines. If you don’t live within a certain distance of the telephone exchange or if the ageing copper lines are in poor condition, the efficiency of ADSL will be drastically affected and the range of services that can be offered will be limited.
  • What hardware do I need?
We’ll provide you with the Wireless broadband equipment at your home. There will be a minimal installation fee and the cost of using the connection is included in your monthly service fee. You will need a computer with an Ethernet connection and Ethernet cable to plug into the wireless broadband equipment. If you have multiple PCs you wish to use with the wireless broadband service, may need a router at additional cost.
  • How reliable is wireless broadband?
The equipment we use to provide wireless service is only of the highest quality and has proven to be extremely reliable. Unlike poor ADSL line conditions, you won’t experience drop outs and have to keep restarting your router.
  • What is “line-of-sight”?
Line-of-sight means obtaining a direct and clear view to the nearest transmitter from where a small antenna device is to be mounted. This means minimal interference from hills, trees, hedges or buildings that can block the path to the transmitter.
  • Do I need to change my e-mail address when I change?
In most cases no, you can organise to retain your existing email address with your previous provider, however they may charge you a fee.
  • Does weather or rain fade affect the wireless service like Sky TV?
No. Weather has no effect on the service you will receive.
  • Do I need to use a firewall and/or antivirus with this service?
It is recommended to use both – if you purchase a router from us then this will already contain a built-in firewall to protect you from Internet baddies.
  • How secure is wireless broadband? Will people be able to use a laptop on the street and steal my Internet?!
If it’s secure enough for the US Military, we think its secure enough for the Internet – the antenna we mount on your roof is transparent to any “war drivers” looking for open wireless networks – it only communicates to our transmitter and doesn’t broadcast it’s signal as an open access point. It uses the highest form of encryption so you know your connection is safe. In saying this, if you use a wireless router inside your home, you will need to ensure that the security and encryption is turned on.
  • I have a Mac / Run Linux – will this service still work on these operating systems?
Our wireless broadband is operating system independent so as long as your OS has an ethernet interface then we can make broadband work for you.
